In order to help foreign students to have a better understanding of Chineseculture and of Chinese local culture with distinctive features, as well as apply their Chinese knowledge into practice, during November 2 to November 4, CIE organized a three-day-long Hui cultural experience for international students.

On November 2, students left for Huangshan, Anhui Province, and visited Huizhou cultural museum, learned about the architecture and culture typical of the Hui as well as Hui opera. Besides this, they introduced to other local culture like Hui ink, slab and other items used for study. Also, they had a personal view of how Hui ink is made at Hu Kaiwen ink factory.

On November 3, students traveled to the ancient Xidi village known as Peach Blossom Spring, gaining a direct perception of the villages’ characteristics of Huizhouin Ming & Qing Dynasties. At the Huizhou Sculpture Training Institute in the afternoon, through the curator’s introduction about Huizhou engraving art, students got a comprehensive understanding of Huizhou’s various engraving textures. They also jointly carved “ECUST’s experience of Huizhou culture” under the instructions of the curator.

At Xie Yu tea factory, with a tea basket and walking through the tea plants, students learned how to pick and knead tea leaves. They also savored locally grown Huangshan Maofeng tea, Qimen black tea and Huangshan chrysanthemum tea.

The three-day cultural experience considerably complemented their classroom learning and enriched international students’ knowledge of Chinese culture.
