Introduction

This course is a listening comprehension skill-training course, not only for training speech sounds, but also for cultivating the perception and comprehension abilities of speech sound, vocabulary, grammar and cultural background.

Aims and Tasks

Intermediate Listening Course focuses on skill training, so understanding the lesson texts is not enough for students. The main task of this course is to enhance students’ Chinese listening comprehension ability through one-year training.

Memorizing language materials.

Grasping main contents and key information of language materials.

Skipping unknown words.

The ability of comprehend speaker’s real meaning; the ability of association and speculation.

Summarizing language materials.

Contents and Requirements

The Intermediate Chinese listening course is generally open for one academic year (2 class hours per week, counting as 2 credits). 

1. Teaching contents

1) Lesson texts, as the language materials, are the main teaching content of this course. And all teaching activities are designed according to the texts. The texts involve in various subjects: emotion, social communication, daily life, travelling, education, psychological construction and etc. The length of texts is usually about 400 words, and the speech speed is 180-220 words per minute.

2) Word and language structure. This course not only helps enhance students’ listening comprehension ability, but also helps them understand specific meanings of words and forms in contexts, then mastering the usage of some important words and language structures.

3) Practices, including pre-listening, listening, and post-listening practices.

 

2. Teaching Requirements

1) Begin with the easiest and then the harder ones, layer upon layer.

2) Combine listening with questioning; raise questions during the listening.

3) Combine listening with speaking, and let students imitate texts, make oral exercises or make after-class surveys.

Teaching Steps and Methods

· Teaching steps

Introduction. Raise questions about the text and instruct students to discuss.

1. Listen and explain the texts. Firstly explain the new words, then listen to the text, and after that do some listening exercises. The listening and explanation of the text should be step by step, and the teacher should elaborately set layers of different difficulties to help students understand and grasp the information points.

2. Post-listening exercises. Make discussions or after-class surveys according to the text content or its topic.

Teaching methods including: elicitation, questioning, listening, discussing, imitating, after-class survey, and etc.

Tests for the Intermediate Listening Course

The Chinese Listening course for Intermediate Students is generally open for one academic year, and students are required to take a test after each academic term.

1. Question types of the test: listening to a whole passage and briefly answering the questions; choosing true or false according to lesson texts; filling the chart according to lesson texts; matching according to lesson texts; reordering the following sentences according to lesson texts; choosing the right answer according to lesson texts; listening blank filling; choosing the right word into the blanks.

2. Scoring method: regular grades (30%), test grades (70%).
