Resident permit application for the first time

Students who will study in China for more than 180 days, students of Chinese language, advanced studies and exchange programs must apply for a residence permit before studying at ECUST.

Students who hold a residence permit in another school must apply for residence permit before they can study in our school.

The validity of the residence permit is the same as the tuition fee.

Students with X2 visa are not required to apply for a residence permit.

Students with X1 visa

The validity of  X1 visa is 30 days after entry into China. International students enter China with X1 visa should register at Admission Office of CIE immediately after entry and apply for Residence Permit(RP).

Step 1 Register at CIE and submit tuition, accommodation fee and insurance;

Step 2 Obtain the Physical Health Certificate issued by Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center

Students who are required to have physical examination or verification should obtain the certificate at Admissions Office of CIE and make an online appointment on hospitable, and then go to Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center for physical examination.

International students must have the physical examination first and obtain the report.  If he/she already has had a physical examination in home country, he/she must go to the go to Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center for physical examination. If he/she fail the examination, he/she need a re-examination.

The medical report takes about 5 working days to obtain.

Step 3  International students should obtain Visa Application Form for Foreign Students in Shanghai with following materials:

Original passport

Original Admission Notice issued by  ECUST in Chinese

Visa Application for Study in China(JW201 or JW202 Form)

Copy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence

Original Health Certificate issued by the Shanghai International Travel Health Care  Center 

Step 4 International students should apply for residence certificates with materials above at Foreigner Residence and Visa Certificate Affair Acceptance Point of Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Application for Residence Permit Extension

When an international student with a residence permit needs to extend the duration of residence to continue his/her study, he/she needs to file an application of residence permit extension, at least 30 days prior to the expiration of duration of the validity period on the residence permit.

Step 1  International students should obtain Visa application form for foreign students in Shanghai in Admission Office of CIE with  documents required as follows:
   ★ The original passport;
   ★ The copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence

   ★ A photo (3.3x4.8mm);
   ★ Certificate of tuition, accommodation fee and insurance

Step 2 International  students should  bring all the documents mentioned above and go to the Foreigner Residence and Visa Certificate Affair Acceptance Point of Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau for application.

 Eligibility

Foreign students who are engaged in off-campus teaching practice activities should meet conditions as follows :

1. Students and exchange students (except for language students);

2. Holding residence certificate of study issued by Shanghai Exit - Entry Administration(not including X2 visa);

3. No off-campus teaching internship in two or above units(inclusive) ;

4. Major-related internship content 

Loss of Passport

When an international student finds out that his/her passport is lost, he/she must go through the following procedures:

1. Immediately report to the local police station and obtain a receipt of case report;

2. Bring the a receipt of case report and go to the Department of Exit and Entry Administration, Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau to get the Certificate of Passport Loss;

3. Apply for a new passport with the Certificate of Passport Loss in the Embassy of his/her home country in China;

4. Within 10 days from obtaining a new passport,  student must bring the Certificate of Passport Loss and to renew the Registration Form of Temporary Residence; Then he/she should obtain a Visa application form for foreign students in Shanghai  from Admission Office of CIE, and then  go to the Foreigner Residence and Visa Certificate Affair Acceptance Point of Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau to apply for a new visa or residence certificate.

Note: It is a violation of law to stay with a new passport but failing to apply for a new visa/residence permit within 10 days from issuance of passport.

Renewal/Replacement of Passport

If an international student plans to renew or replace the passport in China because of reasons like expiration of passport or in his/her home country and enter China with the valid residence permit of old passport, he/she should renew or replace the passport within 10 days.

Step 1 Fill in the new Registration Form of Temporary Residence with valid residence permit;

Step 2 Go to the Admission Office of CIE and obtain Visa application form for foreign students in Shanghai with documents required as follows:

   ★ The new passport and the old passport with the valid residence permit;
   ★ One photo (3.3x4.8mm)
   ★ A photocopy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence(new visa)

Step 3 He/she should go to the Foreigner Residence and Visa Certificate Affair Acceptance Point of Exit-Entry Administration of Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau to apply for renewing visa and RP.
